Francis Jarvis (1768-1840) - Fourth Master of Corinthian Lodge
Overview
Brother Deacon Francis Jarvis, born on August 28, 1768, in Dorchester, Massachusetts, served as the fourth Master of Corinthian Lodge in 1804. A prominent community member, Jarvis was known for his business acumen and dedication to the Lodge and his local Congregational Society.
Early Life and Career
In 1775, at the age of seven, Jarvis was apprenticed to Edward Richardson, a baker in Watertown. By 1789, he moved to Concord, where he worked with Brother John Richardson in the baking trade. In 1790, Jarvis formed a partnership with Mr. Safford under the business name Safford & Jarvis, acquiring Richardson’s baking business. The partnership thrived until 1795, after which Jarvis continued the business independently. In 1805, he expanded his business endeavors, opening a variety store over his bake-house. Later, in 1806, he entered the dry goods business in the "Green Store" with Charles Hammond under the firm Jarvis & Hammond. He resumed baking in 1807 and eventually brought his son, Francis, into the business in 1818, retiring in 1824.
Masonic Contributions and Leadership
A petitioner for Corinthian Lodge’s charter, Francis Jarvis was initiated and crafted at St. Paul’s Lodge in Groton and was raised in Corinthian Lodge on October 2, 1797, becoming a member on November 20, 1797. He served as Secretary in 1802, Senior Warden in 1803, and Master in 1804. His leadership and commitment contributed to the stability and growth of the Lodge during its early years.
Community Involvement and Legacy
In addition to his Masonic work, Jarvis was appointed the 24th Deacon of the Concord Congregational Society in 1812, a position he held until his death. He was also a trustee of the Ministerial Fund in 1813 and represented Concord in the General Court in 1817. In 1832, he acquired a farm, now owned by his son, Captain Francis Jarvis. Deacon Francis Jarvis passed away on October 1, 1840, at the age of 72, leaving behind a legacy of service to both his Lodge and community.
